A Lawrence man is facing multiple felony charges after being arrested Sunday afternoon on suspicion of striking another man with a hammer during a fight and assaulting law enforcement personnel with a vehicle.
The man, Ronald Dwayne Walters Jr., 50, was charged Monday in Douglas County District Court with one count of aggravated battery, one count of criminal threat, two counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, which are all felonies, and one misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property.
Douglas County sheriff’s deputies and a Eudora police officer were dispatched to a report of a fight around 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of East 1900 Road, where a subject was accused of striking someone with a hammer during the altercation, according to George Diepenbrock, a spokesman with the sheriff’s office. A 63-year-old man was injured, but he declined further medical attention at the scene. When deputies located the suspect near the property and attempted to make contact with him, he drove a Jeep Cherokee toward a deputy and a Eudora officer, Diepenbrock said, adding that they were able to move out of the way and were not injured. The suspect, Walters, was eventually placed under arrest and booked into the Douglas County Jail.
During his first appearance in court Monday afternoon, Walters’ bond was set at $20,000 cash or surety. His next court date is May 8.
