A Lawrence man has been charged in Douglas County District Court with shooting at a residence that had three people inside, including two children.
The man, Miles Brian Smothers, 19, is accused of recklessly firing a gun at an occupied residence, according to charging documents. The charge relates to an incident on Jan. 28 in the 1500 block of Wedgewood Drive.
Police released a statement on social media the following day that said they were investigating a report from a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy of shots fired near the intersection of 15th Street and Lindenwood Lane, about a block from Wedgewood Drive. In connection with the incident, a person had reported that their vehicle had been hit by gunfire and their passenger’s shoe had been grazed by a bullet, but no injuries were reported, the post said. Officers recovered numerous shell casings in the street between Lindenwood Lane and Wedgewood Drive on 15th Street during the investigation.
Charges were filed against Smothers on March 7, and he was arrested around 8:30 a.m. Friday, according to the jail booking log. He was later released on a $6,000 own-recognizance bond, meaning he was not required to pay any money to be released. He is next scheduled to appear in court on May 21.
