Lawrence police found a man dead in a central Lawrence apartment Wednesday evening after officers attempted to serve a warrant there, according to a police department news release.

Just before 6 p.m, officers were at an apartment building in the 1700 block of Ohio Street trying to contact a person who was wanted on an out-of-town warrant when they heard a single gunshot from inside the building, according to a news release from the Lawrence Police Department. The release did not specify what the warrant was for.

Officers established a perimeter around the apartment building and evacuated nearby apartment units, the release said; then, at 9:30 p.m., officers entered the apartment and found a dead man with an apparent gunshot wound.

The release said police were still investigating shortly after 10:30 p.m., but that the people who had been evacuated had been allowed to return to their homes. It said police were still working to confirm the man’s identity and notify his next of kin.
