A Lawrence man was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder in connection with a shooting death in June.
The man, Maliqe Crenshaw, 22, was arrested by Lawrence police around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 2200 block of Louisiana Street, according to a social media post from the department. On Wednesday, he was formally charged in Douglas County District Court.
The charge relates to the shooting death of Cameron Renner, 20, of Topeka, on June 3 around 1 a.m. in the 2400 block of Cedarwood Drive. As the Journal-World reported, police responded to the area after multiple residents reported hearing gunfire. Renner was dropped off at LMH Health a short time later with multiple gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead.
Investigators spent months connecting forensic evidence from the incident to Crenshaw, according to the police post, and an affidavit recommending a charge of second-degree murder was submitted to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.
Judge Blake Glover appointed the Douglas County Public Defenders Office to represent him and ordered a $500,000 cash or surety bond.
Defense attorney Angelo Panas argued that Crenshaw should be given an own-recognizance bond, meaning Crenshaw would not have to put up any money to be released. Panas said that Crenshaw has a daughter to care for and local ties to Lawrence. He said Crenshaw would not be a flight risk.
Glover denied that request due to the severity of the charge.
Crenshaw is next scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 21 for a status conference.
