A fight broke out at Lawrence High School last Friday, leaving one teacher with minor injuries and causing two students to seek medical attention. Police have identified three girls as suspects in the incident.
Police responded around 9 a.m. on April 28 to the school, 1901 Louisiana St., in response to a fight, according to the Lawrence police incident log.
Lawrence school district spokesperson Julie Boyle confirmed to the Journal-World that there was a “physical altercation involving a group of students” and that some of the students were seeking medical attention while others were facing disciplinary action. She said school staff along with police responded to the fight.
“The parents of two students took them to seek medical assessments. One staff member received minor injuries while trying to assist. One student was removed from campus for destroying school property,” Boyle said.
The parents of the students involved were contacted and the school took disciplinary action in accordance with school policy, Boyle said. She declined to provide additional information.
Police identified three girls involved in the altercation as suspects in a criminal investigation and plan to submit an affidavit to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for charging consideration, said Laura McCabe, spokesperson for the Lawrence Police Department.
“We’re grateful for our partnership with USD 497, which allows officers in the school who can quickly respond and de-escalate this type of situation,” McCabe told the Journal-World.
The fight did not involve any weapons, and the LHS school resource officer was assisted by patrol officers and an SRO from an area middle school, McCabe said.
