Icy roads cause numerous late-night, early-morning accidents in Douglas County

Icy road conditions that developed Friday evening and continued through Saturday morning in Douglas County led to numerous accidents, which sent at least two people to area hospitals, according to law enforcement agencies.

According to the Lawrence Police Department’s 24-hour incident response logs, officers responded to nine accidents on city streets between about 5:45 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday. That includes several injury accidents — one at 5:48 p.m. in the 1200 block of West 19th Street, one at 6:22 p.m. in the 1900 block of West Sixth Street, and a third at 8:44 p.m. at 27th and Iowa streets. The Journal-World has requested more information about the injury accidents from the Lawrence Police Department.

Elsewhere in the county, at 6:45 a.m. Saturday, a Ford Escape was heading westbound on Kansas Highway 10 just west of Eudora when it slid on the ice, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman George Diepenbrock said in an email. The vehicle went into the median and rolled. Diepenbrock said multiple people were inside, but did not specify how many. He said emergency personnel had to extricate a person from the vehicle, and that one of the people in the vehicle was taken by ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with injuries that were not suspected to be life-threatening.

At least one injury accident in the area took place on Interstate 70. The Kansas Highway Patrol online crash logs said that at 6:23 p.m. Friday, Sandra Louann Brady, 39, of Topeka, lost control of a westbound 2015 Kia Sedona at mile marker 203 on Interstate 70 and slid into the barrier wall. Brady was taken by ambulance to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with suspected minor injuries.
