A Lawrence man was charged on Tuesday in Douglas County District Court with multiple crimes after he allegedly kidnapped a woman on New Year’s Eve 2022 and threatened her with a gun the week before on Christmas Day.
Taheed Jevon Montano, 21, faces one felony count of kidnapping, one felony count of aggravated assault with a firearm and two felony counts of criminal threat. The kidnapping and one of the criminal threats is alleged to have occurred on Dec. 31, 2022, and the aggravated assault and additional count of criminal threat occurred on Dec. 25, 2022, according to charging documents.
Montano is also facing a felony aggravated burglary charge and misdemeanor charges for theft and criminal damage to property for an incident on Dec. 30, 2022; one misdemeanor count of domestic battery for an incident in June of 2022; and a misdemeanor count of violating a protection order on Jan. 10, 2023. All of Montano’s charges relate to the same woman.
During Montano’s first appearance for the kidnapping charge on Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Ricardo Leal recommended that Montano be held on a $50,000 bond, saying he was a safety risk for both the public and the woman if released.
“Firearms are notorious for doing one thing, and they don’t care who they hit,” Leal said.
The firearm incident Montano is charged with is alleged to have happened in a populated area, Leal said.
Judge Stacey Donovan agreed with Leal’s recommendation and set Montano’s bond at $50,000 cash or surety. Donovan appointed defense attorney Michael Clarke to represent Montano in the new case since Clarke is already representing Montano in his previous cases.
Montano is next scheduled in court on Feb. 27 for a preliminary hearing in his burglary case.
The Journal-World has requested Montano’s booking photo from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
