An Overland Park man accused of fleeing from police and drunkenly crashing into a pole in downtown Lawrence waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday in Douglas County District Court.

Kendrick Guerrero, 20, is charged with two felony counts of fleeing from an officer, one misdemeanor count of DUI and one misdemeanor count of possession of a firearm while under the influence, according to charging documents. When Guerrero was initially arrested his home address was listed in Olathe, according to the jail booking log, but that address has since been edited.

The charges relate to an incident around 11 p.m. on April 24, 2022, when Guerrero is alleged to have led police on a car chase beginning at the intersection of 10th and Massachusetts streets through downtown Lawrence, across the Kansas River bridge and back again. Police said at the time that when Guerrero returned south on the bridge, an officer had successfully deployed spike strips on Sixth Street, but Guerrero traveled with deflated tires on Vermont Street to 11th Street, where he hit a parked car and crashed into a pole in the parking lot of the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., as the Journal-World reported.

Guerrero was scheduled for a preliminary hearing, at which a judge would have determined whether he should stand trial, but he waived the right to that hearing Friday, and his defense attorney, Michael Page, said that he was trying to negotiate a plea agreement.

Judge Stacey Donovan scheduled a plea hearing for March 27. Guerrero is currently free on a $5,000 own-recognizance bond, meaning he did not have to put up any money to be released from jail but could be charged that amount if he fails to appear for court.
