The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has joined other law enforcement agencies across Kansas to get impaired drivers off the road as part of the Taking Down DUI traffic enforcement campaign.
This will mean more law enforcement patrols on the streets through Jan. 2.
The days around the New Year’s holiday, which this year falls on Monday, are typically a peak time for crashes involving impaired drivers.
Douglas County Sheriff Jay Armbrister hopes the campaign can act as a deterrent to dangerous driving.
“We want people to celebrate, but the most important thing is to reach your destination safely,” Armbrister said in a news release Friday. “The best thing you can do before you go out is line up a ride from a sober driver or utilize a ride-share service or taxi. Remember: If you drink, don’t drive.”
The Taking Down DUI traffic enforcement campaign is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with safety funds administered by the Kansas Department of Transportation.
