First responders work the scene of a house fire in the 700 block of Illinois Street early Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023, in Old West Lawrence.
Four residents were displaced after an early-morning house fire in Old West Lawrence Thursday.
The fire, reported at 3:35 a.m., was extinguished quickly, and an investigator determined that the cause was “electrical in nature.” No one was injured in the fire, but one firefighter with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical was evaluated at the scene for minor injuries, according to a news release from the department.
A chaplain vehicle was observed on scene as aid was offered to residents, who could not return to their home.
The house fire occurred while a major firefighting operation was underway in downtown Lawrence at Cielito Lindo, a longtime Mexican restaurant at 815 New Hampshire St., which ended up being destroyed in an overnight fire, as the Journal-World reported. Firefighters at the house fire were assisted by staff and equipment from the Overland Park Fire Department as part of a mutual aid request to provide additional coverage in Lawrence as local resources were engaged with the downtown fire. The Overland Park resources were staged at LDCFM’s Station 5, 1911 Stewart Ave., and arrived at the house fire shortly after the first unit.
