Douglas County Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam claiming residents must pay fines to avoid arrest
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving calls that appear to be from a sheriff’s office number and claim that the recipient must pay a fine to avoid being arrested.
The sheriff’s office, in a social media post Tuesday afternoon, noted that the calls coming from the “spoofed” phone number claim individuals failed to appear in court or have an active arrest warrant as reasons they’ll need to pay.
That post states that no deputy or sheriff’s office employee will ever ask people to give them money over the phone for outstanding warrants, to avoid tickets or because they may have missed jury duty.
In the post, the sheriff’s office says those targeted by the scam calls should hang up, then call the sheriff’s office at 785-841-0007; avoid calling any phone number provided during the scam call.
Victims of a phone scam can also contact the Kansas Attorney General’s Office to report it, either online or by calling 785-296-2215.
