Lawrence Police Department spokesperson Kim Murphree told the Journal-World in an email Friday that the recent chases stemmed from a criminal damage incident reported on May 28. Murphree said officers responded to the 1400 block of Kentucky Street after a woman said a man she knew ran his truck into her car and left the scene. The woman told police that she was sitting at home when she heard a crash from the driveway and then saw the red Chevrolet truck crash into her parked car multiple times, Murphree said.
Murphree said that on the evening of May 30, a Lawrence police officer saw a truck matching that description near the intersection of 11th and Vermont streets. The officer tried to pull the truck over near 13th and Vermont, Murphree said, but the truck accelerated away and the officer pursued it. Murphree said that the truck was traveling at high speed and running stop signs, and the officer stopped pursuing it near Seventh and Connecticut streets out of concern for public safety.
On the evening of June 1, Murphree said, a Lawrence police officer saw a blue Ford Edge with a license plate that was supposed to belong to the Chevrolet truck. The officer tried to stop the SUV near 14th and Kentucky, but it sped away and the officer gave chase. Murphree said the SUV ran through red lights and stop signs, and the officer stopped pursuing it in North Lawrence.
As reported by the Journal-World, Drake has been charged in a previous case with felony flee and elude, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and three counts of criminal damage.
The charges are connected to an early-morning car chase on Feb. 3, when Drake is alleged to have fled from police through residential areas around downtown Lawrence. The chase ended when Drake reportedly crashed into multiple cars and a shed.
Drake was booked into the Douglas County Jail later on Feb. 3 and was released on a $15,000 bond the next day, according to the booking log.
He was scheduled to appear Wednesday for an arraignment in that case, but he did not appear in court, according to court records. His arraignment was rescheduled for June 15.
