Emergency crews searched the Kansas River Wednesday morning near Lawrence City Hall for someone who had possibly jumped into the water. The search appeared to last for about an hour before officials indicated that no one was in the water and the search was called off.

Laura McCabe, a spokesperson with the Lawrence Police Department, said the search was conducted out of “an abundance of caution.”

“We responded to a call about a man who seemed disoriented and possibly impaired jumping over the side of the bridge,” she told the Journal-World. “After several units responded and investigated, we were able to identify the possible victim and contacted him and a family member. He’s safe and sound” and was apparently never in the water. McCabe said the man was “known to law enforcement.”

McCabe said the call came in at 10:32 and the incident lasted until 11:44 a.m.

Shortly before 11 a.m., one lane on the northbound side of the bridge was closed — blocked by a firetruck — and emergency boats were being deployed from the Eighth Street boat ramp. Three boats were launched into the river.

McCabe said “the call was ultimately unfounded.”
