Firefighters extinguished a fire Thursday morning that left the garage of a southwest Lawrence home without a roof and resulted in a police officer being sent to the hospital.
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews responded around 1:15 a.m. to 2409 Brookside Drive, which is just southwest of Clinton Parkway and Kasold Drive. Scanner traffic indicated that flames were coming from the home’s rooftop. When fire crews arrived, they searched the residence but found no one inside, according to a release from LDCFM.
While crews were battling the fire, a firefighter initiated a “mayday” call, which indicates that a firefighter is or could be in extraordinary danger, but the alert was quickly rescinded after the firefighter was located, LDCFM said.
Prior to the arrival of LDCFM crews, four Lawrence police officers arrived and attempted to search the residence for occupants, according to a social media post from the Lawrence Police Department. The officers observed a vehicle in the driveway, went inside the house and found no one. Scanner traffic indicated that heavy smoke forced the officers out of the house.
One of the officers was evaluated by medics on the scene and was later treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. The officer was released a short time later and is recovering, the post said.
