Fire crews responded to reports of smoke in a University of Kansas building Wednesday morning, briefly closing access to Jayhawk Boulevard.

Tom Fagan, division chief of administration for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, said in an email that firefighters responded to Dyche Hall, 1345 Jayhawk Blvd., on KU’s campus for multiple fire alarms. When they arrived, they found smoke on several levels of the building, he said.

The firefighters determined that no fire existed in the building and that the smoke was caused by a “burned belt” in the building’s HVAC system, Fagan said. The crews remained on scene to ventilate the building, which is home to KU’s Natural History Museum.

While crews were responding, radio traffic suggested campus buses were halted from traveling on Jayhawk Boulevard. A spokeswoman for the university said traffic was set to reopen shortly thereafter.
