Lawrence police block a portion of Massachusetts Street near 20th Street Monday afternoon, Sept. 27, 2021, after a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.
The pedestrian struck by a vehicle in an injury accident Monday in central Lawrence was a student at Cordley Elementary School, according to an email from the school’s principal. The school district said the student’s parents expected the child to return home Tuesday from the hospital.
Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department said Tuesday the pedestrian was a 9-year-old boy.
The incident happened at the intersection of 20th and Massachusetts streets around 4 p.m. Monday, the Journal-World previously reported. The student was reportedly crossing Massachusetts Street from west to east and was struck by a southbound vehicle.
Ernst told the Journal-World at the time that officers were investigating the injury accident at the intersection. He said the pedestrian was taken to the hospital for serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Ernst said all of the individuals involved in the wreck remained on scene and spoke to officers.
Becky Reaver, Cordley’s principal, said in an email later to Cordley families that “a vehicle struck a student crossing the street at 20th and Massachusetts while walking home from school. An ambulance transported the student and a parent to an area hospital. We cannot share other details due to the privacy rights of students and families, but please know that we are sending all of our very best wishes their way.”
Reaver included in the email a list of safety tips for crossing streets from the National Safe Kids Campaign.
