A University of Kansas student has been charged with rape in connection with an incident earlier this month at a campus dormitory.

Chi Hong Kai, 19, was recently formally charged with the level-one felony in Douglas County District Court. Kai lives in one of the university’s residence halls, according to the jail booking log. A spokeswoman for KU said a person with the same name is currently enrolled at the university.

According to a charging document provided to the Journal-World, Kai allegedly had sexual intercourse with an 18-year-old female KU student without her consent by overcoming her with force or fear.

The charge also contains an alternative claim, accusing Kai of having sexual intercourse with the woman when she was incapable of giving consent, such as having a mental deficiency or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

If convicted, Kai could face a minimum of a little more than 12 years in prison, according to the state’s sentencing guidelines.

Kai was originally arrested on suspicion of the charge around 8 p.m. Sept. 22. KU Police Deputy Chief James Druen told the Journal-World Kai was arrested after officers investigated an incident that occurred on Sept. 16 at Stouffer Place Apartments, a university residence hall.

Kai was released from custody after posting a $100,000 own recognizance bond.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office denied the Journal-World’s request for Kai’s booking photo.
