A Topeka man is facing felony charges after he was arrested early Wednesday morning for allegedly brandishing a firearm at a woman during an argument while they were on Interstate 70 in Douglas County.

Jacob M. Goans, 28, was formally charged in Douglas County District Court Wednesday afternoon with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, all of which are felonies.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Goans around 1:30 a.m., according to the Douglas County Jail booking log.

George Diepenbrock, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, told the Journal-World that deputies responded around 12:30 a.m. to a report of a domestic disturbance near mile marker 192 on the highway, which is west of Lawrence. He said a 24-year-old woman reported she was driving westbound on I-70 when her boyfriend, Goans, got into an argument with her that turned physical. The woman said Goans displayed a firearm during the incident.

Diepenbrock said dispatchers received multiple other calls about the incident from people passing by on the highway.

The man had fled from the vehicle, and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper later located him in the area. Sheriff’s deputies also recovered a gun at the scene of the incident and determined it had been reported stolen in Missouri.

In court, Judge James T. George set a $10,000 own-recognizance bond. As of Wednesday afternoon, Goans was still in jail custody.
