Person in west Lawrence home shot after ‘negligent discharge’ while handling gun

A person at a home in west Lawrence suffered a gunshot wound over the weekend after what police are describing as “a negligent discharge while handling a firearm.”
The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. Saturday in the 900 Block of Alma Drive.
According to Lt. David Ernst, a spokesman for the Lawrence Police Department, officers arrived on scene and contacted the patient, who was suffering from a serious, but nonlife-threatening gunshot wound. The patient was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Based on the information obtained at the scene, police said the incident appeared to have been the result of a negligent discharge while handling a gun.
