2 arrested after high-speed chase through Lawrence

A high-speed chase beginning in Lawrence Monday afternoon took law enforcement through rural areas of Douglas and Jefferson counties before coming to an end near the intersection of 13th Street and U.S. Highway 24.

Kansas Highway Patrol Technical Trooper Donald Hughes told the Journal-World police used a “tactical vehicle intervention” maneuver at the site, which is about six miles north of Lawrence city limits, to end the pursuit, which had lasted approximately an hour.

Two individuals were arrested at the scene. Hughes said he did not have the suspects’ names yet, but they are expected to be booked into the Douglas County Jail. As of 6:30 p.m., the arrests had not been reported in the Douglas County booking log.

Hughes said KHP began pursuing the vehicle at 23rd Street and O’Connell Road in southeastern Lawrence sometime around 4:30 p.m. It’s unclear why police were following the vehicle. Hughes said the cause of the pursuit is an ongoing investigation.

According to scanner traffic, police followed a vehicle traveling up to 70 mph within city limits. The chase appeared to be taking place in the southeast part of Lawrence, with scanner traffic indicating pursuit in the area surrounding 23rd Street and Haskell Avenue. The vehicle left Lawrence heading east toward Eudora, then went north into Jefferson County, where law enforcement pursued the vehicle in rural parts of the area for most of the chase’s duration.

While the chase reached high speeds, Hughes said law enforcement used caution. He said police had aircraft following the vehicle’s path, and they used road spikes to slow the vehicle down before using the vehicle intervention.

No officers, suspects or members of the public were injured in the event, Hughes said.
