A 39-year-old man is facing several criminal charges for allegedly stealing items from garages in southern Lawrence on Sunday.

Clayton M. Schartz, of Lawrence, was charged in Douglas County District Court on Monday with two counts of aggravated burglary, which are felonies, and two counts of theft, which are misdemeanors.

Lawrence police arrested Schartz around 10:30 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a man entering a residential garage in the 4100 block of Teal Drive and leaving with several items, Kim Murphree, of the Lawrence Police Department, said Monday. Police located Schartz in the 2500 block of Wakarusa Drive and recovered items from homes in the 4100 block and 4300 block of Teal Drive.

In court, Judge James T. George told Schartz that if he is convicted of the felonies he could face up to 172 months in prison, a little more than 14 years, for each charge.

Noting that Schartz is facing other criminal charges in Douglas County, George set a cash or surety bond at $42,000. Schartz told the judge his other cases were for theft.

The Journal-World has requested Schartz’s booking photo, but the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has not yet responded.
