A Lawrence woman is facing a felony charge for allegedly threatening an individual with a gun while drunk on the July 4 holiday.

Susan A. Winans, 66, was formally charged in Douglas County District Court on Tuesday with aggravated assault, which is a felony, and criminal restraint and possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which are misdemeanors.

Patrick Compton, a spokesman for the Lawrence Police Department, said officers responded to a call in the 2500 block of Crossgate Drive, which is in southwest Lawrence, around 11:15 p.m. Sunday. The caller told police that Winans threatened to shoot them if they did not leave a parking lot in the area.

Police located Winans and arrested her at the scene of the incident. Compton said she had a firearm that was also recovered at the scene.

While appearing in court, Winans said the firearm she had was not loaded and she believed the charges were “out of line.” She also said she is retired and has lived in Lawrence for only a few months.

Judge James T. George told Winans that he was not there to find her guilty or not guilty and suggested she not discuss the case until she hired a lawyer.

George set a $6,000 own recognizance bond with the conditions that Winans have no contact with the alleged victim and wear a GPS ankle monitor when she is released from custody. Winans’ next court appearance is scheduled for July 14.

The sheriff’s office on Tuesday refused to release Winans’ booking photo to the Journal-World.
