A Lawrence woman is facing felony charges in Douglas County District Court for allegedly abusing an infant.

Brittany M. Jewell, 25, on Tuesday was formally charged with abuse of a child and aggravated assault, both felonies, stemming from a July 10 incident involving the infant. Jewell was also charged with criminal threat, a felony, and domestic battery, a misdemeanor, stemming from an Aug. 6 incident with two adults.

On July 10, Jewell allegedly tortured or cruelly beat a child under the age of 6 and caused physical contact with another person where great bodily harm could have been inflicted, according to a charging document provided to the Journal-World. The alleged victim in those incidents was 2 months old at the time.

Further details about those incidents were not immediately available. Major Trent McKinley of the Lawrence Police Department said the charges were filed after a recent investigation conducted by the department’s special victims unit and the Kansas Department for Children and Families. He said the alleged abuse occurred at a location in Lawrence over the last several weeks, but he declined to provide any further information.

Additionally, on Aug. 6, Jewell allegedly caused bodily harm to a man she was either dating or lived with, according to the charging document. She also is accused of threatening to commit violence against the man and another woman.

The abuse charge is a level four felony. If convicted of the charge, Jewell faces a minimum prison sentence of 38 months, or a little more than three years, according to the state’s sentencing guidelines. Both the aggravated assault and criminal threat charges are lower-level felonies that call for a minimum sentence of probation for individuals with no prior criminal history.

During Jewell’s first appearance, the court set a $30,000 cash or surety bond, according to court records. As of Wednesday morning, Jewell was still in custody. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 25.
