A Lawrence man is facing several felony charges for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a woman.

Robert L. Brothers Jr., 18, is charged with five felonies and four misdemeanors for two incidents that occurred in February, according to an amended charging document recently provided to the Journal-World. Brothers appeared in Douglas County District Court this week for an arraignment on the new charges, where Judge Amy Hanley set the case to go to trial on Sept. 20.

According to the amended complaint:

On Feb. 5, Brothers allegedly confined and caused bodily harm to a woman he was dating, resulting in a charge of aggravated kidnapping, a felony, and domestic battery, a misdemeanor.

Then on Feb. 10, Brothers allegedly confined and caused bodily harm to the same woman. He also is accused of putting the woman in immediate threat of bodily harm with the use of a handgun, which was stolen. That incident resulted in charges of aggravated kidnapping, criminal threat and two counts of aggravated assault, which are all felonies. It also resulted in charges of domestic battery, theft and interference with law enforcement, which are misdemeanors.

Further details of what occurred on Feb. 5 and Feb. 10 were not immediately available. The Lawrence Police Department told the Journal-World that officers arrested Brothers on Feb. 10 on suspicion of the several charges. LPD declined to provide any further details, saying the case is domestic in nature, but filed an affidavit with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for charging consideration.

The Journal-World requested a copy of the affidavit in February, but the court declined the request at the time. The Journal-World has filed another request in light of the amended charges but has not yet received the decision from the court.

Additionally, the Journal-World requested a copy of Brothers’ booking photo, but the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office refused to release it on Thursday.

Brothers is currently being held in the Douglas County Jail on a $250,000 cash or surety bond, according to jail records.
