Authorities identify 2 killed as result of weekend crash on Farmer’s Turnpike

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office released more information Monday about a crash on North 1800 Road, the Farmer’s Turnpike, that left two people dead over the weekend.

A Toyota Prius, driven by 30-year-old Bryon Virtue, of Wellsville, was in the eastbound lane and was hit head-on when a westbound Nissan Sentra, driven by 61-year-old Princess Jewel Anthony, of Topeka, crossed into the eastbound lane, Jenn Hethcoat, public information officer for the sheriff’s office, said in an email Monday. The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, the Journal-World previously reported.

Anthony was pronounced dead at the scene; Virtue was taken to a hospital in Topeka, where he died from injuries he suffered, the Journal-World reported.

The accident occurred in the 700 block of North 1800 Road, which is northwest of Lawrence near the interchange with Kansas Highway 10, the Journal-World reported.

The crash was still under investigation as of Monday afternoon, Hethcoat said.

Virtue was an officer with the Wellsville Police Department, according to a post on the agency’s Facebook page by Chief John Blair.
