2 killed in crash Saturday morning on Farmer’s Turnpike

Two people were killed Saturday morning in a two-car crash on Farmer’s Turnpike northwest of Lawrence, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

In an email to the Journal-World, Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Charlie Cooper said the fatal accident occurred about 5:30 a.m. in the 700 block of North 1800 Road, also known as the Farmer’s Turnpike. The site is near the Kansas Highway 10/Farmer’s Turnpike intersection. The names of the two people are being withheld pending notification of families, Cooper said.

Cooper said the only people involved in the accident were the drivers of the two cars involved, a 2010 Nissan Sentra and a 2010 Toyota Prius. The female driver, in the Nissan, was pronounced dead on the scene, and the male driver, in the Prius, died after being transported to a Topeka hospital, Cooper said.

The accident remains under investigation.
