Story updated at 10:35 a.m. Tuesday:
A man was injured in a reported shooting Monday afternoon, according to Lawrence police.
First responders were dispatched around 3:51 p.m. Monday to an apartment in the 2300 block of Wakarusa Drive regarding a possible shooting, according to the Lawrence Police Department. Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
The man was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, LPD spokesman Patrick Compton said. Emergency radio traffic indicated that medics were taking a patient to Stormont Vail hospital in Topeka around 4:05 p.m.
As of Tuesday morning, police were still investigating the shooting, and no arrests had been made, Compton said in a press release.
According to police, the victim said he had returned home and interrupted a burglar who was attempting to steal “a weapon” from the residence. The suspect reportedly shot the victim using that weapon, left the weapon at the home and fled east, police said. Police did not provide any details about the weapon.
Police said the victim described the suspect as a white man “of average height” with a white T-shirt and black pants.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7509, or Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County at 785-843-8477. Tips to Crime Stoppers can be anonymous.
