72-year-old woman critically injured in head-on crash on 23rd Street

A 72-year-old woman was critically injured in a crash in eastern Lawrence on Friday evening, Lawrence police said.

Emergency personnel responded at about 7 p.m. Friday to the crash near 23rd Street and Silicon Avenue, according to scanner traffic. Lawrence police Sgt. Drew Fennelly told the Journal-World that the accident was a head-on crash involving two vehicles.

The woman was extricated from her vehicle and taken by helicopter to an area trauma center, Fennelly said. Nobody else was injured, he said.

As of about 8:30 p.m. Friday, Fennelly said 23rd Street was closed between Haskell Avenue and Harper Street and would probably remain closed for a few hours.

According to a Twitter post, Lawrence police are asking for any witnesses of this crash to please call (785) 832-7509.
