In lawsuit, Douglas County commissioner says man negligently hit her with his vehicle

A Douglas County commissioner has filed a lawsuit alleging that a man negligently hit her with his vehicle while she was walking in a parking lot.

Michelle Derusseau, the vice chair of the County Commission, filed the suit in Douglas County District Court on Thursday. She is being represented by Lawrence attorney Jerry K. Levy.

According to the suit, Derusseau was walking in the parking lot of Hy-Vee, 3504 Clinton Parkway, on March 19, 2019, when Curtis N. Harris, of Lawrence, struck her with his vehicle.

The suit alleges Harris “negligently failed to keep a proper lookout for pedestrians as he backed his vehicle from a parking place and struck” Derusseau, which led to an injury. The suit does not elaborate on what kind of injury she suffered.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Harris had not responded to the lawsuit.

Derusseau is seeking a judgment of $75,000, according to the suit.
