No serious injury crashes reported Tuesday amid wintry weather

Despite a winter weather advisory and predictions of ice and snow accumulations, road conditions were not bad enough to cause many crashes and slide-offs in Douglas County on Tuesday.

Lawrence police responded to one noninjury crash Tuesday morning, Lt. David Ernst said via email, but none that involved injuries. As of 3:15 p.m., officers had not been called to any motorist assists, he said.

County roads didn’t have any particularly hazardous spots either, according to a sheriff’s office spokesperson.

“We are grateful to report we had no slide-offs or crashes reported today,” Jenn Hethcoat, public information officer for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said via email. “We took one report of a single vehicle non-injury crash from yesterday that was not weather related.”

As of 3:30 p.m., the Kansas Highway Patrol only listed one crash report for Tuesday. A 20-year-old Iowa man suffered suspected minor injuries in a crash on Interstate 70 in Douglas County, according to that report.

The man was westbound in the left lane near mile marker 202.6, which is just east of the Iowa Street interchange, just before 8 a.m. Tuesday when his vehicle traveled onto the shoulder and struck the median barrier wall, according to the report. He was wearing a seat belt, the report said. The vehicle was towed from the scene, but the report did not indicate that the man was transported anywhere for medical treatment.

A winter weather advisory that had been issued for Douglas County was canceled around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, about an hour and a half before it was set to expire, according to Douglas County Emergency Management.

According to the NWS, as of around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, warmer temperatures were expected to move into northeastern Kansas and push freezing rain out of the area; however, the weather service still recommended caution for anyone who had to be on the roads Tuesday night.

It is also possible that the area will receive snow, sleet and freezing rain beginning Thursday night and continuing into Friday, New Year’s Day, according to the NWS forecast. However, Saturday and Sunday are expected to be mostly sunny and clear.
