This image from Lawrence Police Department accident report No. 02-19-046184 shows the intersection of 17th and Kentucky streets and an accident between a bicycle and a Toyota Corolla that occurred Aug. 16, 2019.

A cyclist injured in an Aug. 16 collision with a Toyota Corolla didn’t stop at the stop sign on 17th Street before attempting to cross Kentucky, witnesses told police.

In addition, the driver of the Corolla was reportedly eating a meal from Kentucky Fried Chicken — an officer wrote that he found a half-eaten bowl of mashed potatoes on the front passenger seat.

The cyclist, a 30-year-old woman with a Lawrence address, was initially believed to have suffered serious injuries, and she was taken by ambulance to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. Kentucky Street was closed for a few hours between 16th and 19th streets in connection with the accident, the Journal-World previously reported.

According to online University of Kansas records, the cyclist is a visiting scholar and the driver is a graduate research assistant.

The publicly available portion of the Lawrence Police Department’s accident report was reviewed Aug. 29 and published online.

At 4:50 p.m. Aug. 16, the Corolla, driven by a 40-year-old woman with a McLouth address, was headed northbound in the easternmost lane of Kentucky Street where it intersects with 17th. The cyclist was eastbound on the southern side of 17th Street, the accident report shows.

The bicycle entered the intersection and the Corolla struck it with its front bumper, the report indicates. The car’s windshield was severely damaged and concaved. The bicycle came to rest on the northwestern corner of the intersection, the report shows, but it does not indicate how damaged the bike was.

The officer arriving on scene wrote that he found the cyclist lying face down on the pavement. She was able to move her hands and feet and speak softly, the report says, and she complained of pain in her left arm and shoulder.

Interviewed at the accident scene, the driver was not injured but was “visibly upset” and said she never saw the cyclist until the collision, according to the report. She agreed to let police check her cellphone, and the officers reported that it didn’t appear she’d been texting.

One witness at the scene told police the cyclist didn’t slow down or stop for the stop sign, and she didn’t react to the traffic in the roadway. The witness was “surprised” the cyclist made it past the western lane of Kentucky due to the amount of traffic, the report says.

Another witness who was in a car eastbound on 17th Street told police the cyclist “hesitated” at the stop sign but did not stop, and she was almost struck by a car in the west lane but it missed her, the report says.

Later the same day, the cyclist was expected to be released from the hospital, the Journal-World reported previously. She had suffered road rash and some abrasions, according to the accident report.

An officer visited the hospital and spoke with the cyclist, who said she did stop at the stop sign, and she believed the driver was “traveling really fast.”

Neither the driver nor the cyclist showed any signs of impairment, according to the report. The report concludes that the cyclist failed to stop or to yield the right of way to the northbound traffic, and the KFC meal may have been a distraction to the driver.

A spokesman for the Lawrence Police Department confirmed Friday that no citations were issued in the accident.
