The Lawrence Police Department has forwarded its investigation into a fatal stabbing on to the Douglas County district attorney, Officer Shawn Gross told the Journal-World via email Monday.
John M. Minoglio, 40, of Lawrence, died shortly after 5 p.m. Oct. 20 after he was stabbed during an altercation with another man in front of a home in the 1900 block of Massachusetts Street, the Journal-World has reported.
One witness told the Journal-World he didn’t know what caused the fight or how it began but he saw Minoglio punching the other man in the head. The two men continued to fight until Minoglio lay down in the grass and the other man walked away. The witness said he thought Minoglio was sitting down to collect himself after the fight.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers and medics found Minoglio in the grass and began treatment, but first responders were unable to revive him and he died at the scene.
The man who was involved in the altercation that led to the stabbing was interviewed by police and released pending the completion of the investigation, police said at the time. Police did not identify that man.
The Douglas County district attorney’s office will review the investigation and determine whether to pursue charges in connection with the incident.
