Story updated at 1:32 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3:

A woman was found bound and unconscious inside a vehicle at the school district’s Wakarusa Valley building late Saturday, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

At the request of the Topeka Police Department, deputies went to the school around 11:30 p.m. Saturday for an adult welfare check, said Jenn Hethcoat, public information officer for the sheriff’s office. There they found the woman in a white Silverado truck, Hethcoat said via email Sunday morning.

Deputies took the woman to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and were met by Osage County detectives, Hethcoat said. That county has taken over the investigation, Hethcoat said.

Osage County dispatch Sunday morning told the Journal-World the department has no comment at this time. A public information officer with the Topeka Police Department did not immediately respond to the Journal-World’s voicemail or email seeking more information.

The former Wakarusa Valley Elementary School building, 1104 East 1000 Road, now houses the Lawrence Virtual School and Greenbush Resource Center. It’s roughly 3.3 miles as the crow flies southwest of the Kansas Highway 10 interchange at Iowa Street/U.S. 59 Highway.

In a Facebook post around 12:40 p.m. Sunday, the school district addressed the incident: “The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirms that none of the crimes involved occurred in Douglas County nor had any connection to the school district or the school property, other than that is where the vehicle was parked and located by law enforcement.”
