Wednesday, May 29 — Latest tornado news and notes: ‘It’s not safe for the general public’ in damaged areas of Douglas County

UPDATED: 10:20 a.m. May 29

An area informally known as the Shank Hill neighborhood was hit particularly hard by Tuesday’s tornado. At least a dozen homes in the subdivision had significant damage, with many likely to be complete losses.

The subdivision is just north and west of the U.S. Highway 59 and Douglas County Route 458 interchange south of Lawrence.

Here are scenes from the area as it existed Tuesday evening shortly after the tornado went through the area.

There was both debris and a crowd of people around the home of Darren and Allison Bird’s house at 1254 North 1000 Road following a tornado on May 28, 2019.

In addition to the home, antique autos were damaged at the Darren and Allison Bird home in the Shank Hill neighborhood near County Route 458 and U.S. Highway 59 south of Lawrence.
