Crews extinguish house fire in eastern Lawrence; 3 cats missing

No people were injured but some cats were missing after firefighters extinguished a house fire on Tuesday afternoon in eastern Lawrence.

The fire was reported just before 2 p.m. at 2714 Ponderosa Drive, Division Chief Tom Fagan of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical said in a news release. Firefighters had the fire under control in 20 minutes.

Damage was estimated at $40,000, Fagan said, but the cause of the fire was still under investigation late Tuesday afternoon.

Fagan said that when firefighters arrived, flames were showing from a front window.

He said the resident was already safely out of the building but told firefighters that several cats were still in the house.

Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the house and searched for the missing pets, he said. One cat was located alive but three others were not accounted for as of late Tuesday.
