One killed, 4 injured in 3-car crash northwest of Lawrence

One person was killed and four others were taken to hospitals after a three-vehicle crash Sunday northwest of Lawrence.

The wreck happened about 4:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 24 near U.S. Highway 59, in Jefferson County, according to a preliminary report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

An eastbound Jeep Wrangler rear-ended an eastbound Dodge Dart that had slowed to turn left onto Oak Road, according to the report. The Jeep then crossed the center line and hit a Nissan Rogue head on.

A passenger in the Nissan — Theresa Louise Elsinger, 68, of Marysville — died at the scene. It wasn’t clear if she was wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

Another passenger in the Nissan, a 69-year-old Frankfort woman, was taken to a hospital with suspected serious injuries. The Nissan’s driver, a 74-year-old Frankfort man, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Jeep, a 50-year-old Oskaloosa woman, and the driver of the Dart, a 19-year-old Perry man, also were taken to hospitals with suspected serious injuries.

The injured motorists were wearing seat belts, according to the patrol’s report.
