Missouri man arrested in Eudora after car chase that started on I-70

A Missouri man was arrested Saturday night in Eudora after a chase that started on Interstate 70 northeast of Lawrence.

Sgt. Kristen Channel, of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said via e-mail that 29-year-old Phillip Candillo, of Smithville, Mo., was arrested at about 11 p.m. Saturday at the Kansas Highway 10/Church Street interchange in Eudora after a sheriff’s deputy performed a tactical intervention maneuver to stop the Volkswagen Passat the suspect was driving. Sheriff deputies had already used a spike strip to flatten tires on the car.

Channel said that a sheriff deputy first spotted the Volkswagen, which had been reported stolen, at 10:30 p.m. on Interstate 70 just east of the East Lawrence exit but lost sight of the vehicle. A second deputy started pursuit of the suspect vehicle after spotting it on U.S. Highway 40 near Sixth Street, Channel states. The pursuit continued until the suspect was stopped in Eudora.

According to Channel, Candillo was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of reckless driving, driving with a suspended/revoked driver’s license, possession of stolen property, attempting to flee and elude law enforcement officers and reckless driving.
