Man taken to hospital after street fight in bar district off KU campus

A man was taken to the hospital after being injured in a fight around bar-closing time early Sunday morning near 14th and Ohio streets in Lawrence.

At 1:40 a.m., University of Kansas police responded to a fight in the 1400 block of Ohio Street and encountered a group of about 15 to 20 people in the street, Deputy Chief James Anguiano said.

“People scattered as police showed up,” he said.

A 20-year-old man who was lying on the ground was taken to the hospital for his injuries, Anguiano said. Details about what caused the man’s injuries weren’t available, Anguiano said, but they were not considered life-threatening.

Anguiano said police did not have information about a suspect and encouraged anyone with information about the incident to call KU police at 785-864-5900.

The location of the fight was just off the KU campus. However, Anguiano said KU police frequently patrol the area, which is also near numerous KU scholarship halls and parking lots. He said they arrived on scene first and are pursuing the ongoing investigation.

Lawrence police also responded to the scene to assist KU in handling the “active fight,” said Officer Shawn Gross of the Lawrence Police Department.
