A 33-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly crashing into an oncoming vehicle and fleeing into the Baker Wetlands, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 8:25 a.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a vehicle crash in the 1400 block of North 1300 Road, Jenn Hethcoat, public information officer for the sheriff’s department, said via email. The driver of a westbound vehicle intentionally drove into an eastbound vehicle; the eastbound vehicle rolled, and both ended up in a ditch, Hethcoat said.

The driver of the westbound vehicle attempted to pull a female passenger from his own vehicle against her will after the crash, Hethcoat said; she fought back and fled from him on foot. A passerby stopped to help, and the suspect allegedly jumped onto the passerby’s vehicle and smashed the windshield before fleeing on foot into the Baker Wetlands, Hethcoat said.

The suspect was found and taken into custody after resisting arrest, Hethcoat said. There were no major injuries to anyone involved and no one was transported for medical care.

The man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of aggravated battery, attempted kidnapping, driving with a suspended license, interference with law enforcement, criminal damage to property and reckless driving, online jail records indicate. He was being held without bond in the Douglas County Jail as of Saturday afternoon.
