Motorcyclist injured in 23rd Street accident still in critical condition

A man whose motorcycle collided with an SUV on Friday near 23rd Street and East Hills Drive is still hospitalized, police say.

Patrick Compton, a spokesman for the department, said via email Wednesday that the 37-year-old motorcyclist, who was taken to a Kansas City-area trauma center with life-threatening injuries on Friday, is still in critical condition.

Compton said that out of respect for the family, the department is not releasing the man’s name at this time.

The accident closed down East 23rd Street for about six hours the evening of Aug. 23, Compton said previously.

The motorcycle was reportedly westbound on East 23rd as an SUV was exiting a business and heading southbound on East Hills Drive, Lawrence Police Officer Drew Fennelly told the Journal-World at the time. Both vehicles were seriously damaged, but the SUV driver was not injured and was cooperative with police.
