Story updated at 5:53 p.m. Friday

One person died in a one-vehicle crash east of Lawrence Friday afternoon.

The wreck occurred just before 2 p.m. in the 1800 block of North 1500 Road, Sgt. Kristen Channel of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said in an email. She said the vehicle was westbound when it apparently lost control on the gravel, left the roadway, struck a utility pole and rolled.

There was only one person in the vehicle, and that person died at the scene, Channel said.

A badly damaged pickup truck came to rest upright in the grass north of the road, a reporter at the scene observed.

A humane society worker on scene helped to remove a dog from the wrecked vehicle and drove it away from the scene. The dog did not appear to be hurt.

That portion of North 1500 Road was closed following the crash.

As of late Friday afternoon, the sheriff’s office had not released the victim’s name or other information.
