Road rage suspect escapes Lawrence police after overnight car chase, turns self in later

A road rage suspect who escaped after leading police on a chase overnight later turned himself in and was arrested.

The incident started just after 4:30 a.m. Thursday, when Lawrence police were dispatched to a report of road rage, Sgt. Amy Rhoads said in an email.

An officer tried to stop the suspect’s vehicle, but initiated a pursuit when the driver fled, Rhoads said. Rhoads said the suspect crashed near Lakeview Road and North Iowa Street, an industrial neighborhood in northern Lawrence. She said the driver fled on foot and police couldn’t find him afterward.

Later Thursday, the suspect turned himself in, Rhoads said.

The 21-year-old Lawrence man, William D. Kramer, was booked into jail on suspicion of reckless driving, interference with law enforcement, fleeing police and failing to report an accident, according to jail records. Police sent their case to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, Rhoads said, though, as of late Thursday, charges had not been filed.
