Fire crews respond to a generator fire at the Lawrence Energy Center, 1250 North 1800 Road, on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2018.

Crews extinguished a fire at the Lawrence Energy Center on Wednesday evening, according to scanner traffic.

The fire was first reported at around 6:19 p.m. Wednesday at the power station at 1250 North 1800 Road, which is operated by Westar Energy. One of the plant’s generators had caught fire, according to the scanner traffic.

As of about 7:30 p.m., scanner traffic suggested the fire had been extinguished.

Westar spokeswoman Gina Penzig said in an email response to the Journal-World that the fire was caused by an oil leak. Penzig said that the generator that caught fire is now offline, but that no interruption in service is expected. She said Westar expected to have the plant back online in a few days.
