The recently signed federal legislation that headed off of a federal government shutdown included $20 million in new funding for the University of Kansas Hospital system.

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, announced that the legislation signed by President Trump on Tuesday included $10 million in funding to purchase equipment for a new KU Cancer Center building that will be constructed on the Kansas City, Kan. campus of the KU Medical Center.

The bill also included $10 million of funding to help complete an expansion and renovation of the emergency department at KU’s main hospital building on the medical center campus.

Moran is a member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, which makes recommendations on vast amounts of funding for health care, science, education, agriculture and a variety of other enterprises.

The $20 million in new funding is in addition to $36 million in funding that Moran helped secure last month for construction activities at the KU Cancer Center. Since 2022, Moran has helped secure $115 million of federal investments for the Cancer Center project.

It was in 2022 that the National Cancer Institute designated the University of Kansas Cancer Center as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. KU officials said at the time that the designation, which is the same one that the Mayo Clinic and M.D. Anderson have for their cancer centers, would produce a wave of new funding opportunities.

Construction started in May on the $300 million-plus cancer center building, and it is expected to open by mid–2028. The building is expected to be a dual use facility that will house both researchers and doctors who provide care to patients.
