Fire weather watch, red flag warning issued for Douglas County; outdoor burning prohibited this weekend

The National Weather Service is anticipating dangerous fire weather conditions for Douglas County this weekend.

The NWS issued a fire weather watch for both Saturday and Sunday and a red flag warning on Saturday. The watch is in place because critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur, and residents are encouraged to listen for later forecasts. The watch will be in effect on from 10 p.m. on Saturday until 7 p.m. on Sunday.

The red flag warning means forecasters are confident that critical fire conditions will occur on Saturday due to a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures, which contributes to extreme fire behavior. Fires are expected to ignite easily and spread rapidly. A red flag warning will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday.

Outdoor burning is prohibited in Douglas County through the weekend.

The County Burn Hotline at 785-832-5394 is updated every day at 8 a.m., and it will indicate whether outdoor burning is authorized for that day. For more information on open burn regulations and safety in Douglas County, visit dgcoks.gov/openburning.
