Five Lawrence-based organizations that assist crime victims were awarded with a total of just over $336,000 in federal funding grants by Gov. Laura Kelly.

Gov. Kelly announced in a press release Wednesday the awarding of a total of around $10.4 million in federal Victims of Crime Act grant funding to organizations across the state. According to the release, a total of 64 organizations and agencies earned the grants from the Federal Crime Victims Fund, which is financed by fines and penalties from convictions in federal cases.

The five groups that earned the funding in Lawrence include:

•Child Advocacy Center of Douglas County, $24,008

•Douglas County CASA, $9,653

•Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, $62,635

•The Sexual Trauma and Abuse Care Center, $92,031

•The Willow Domestic Violence Center, $147,905

Those five organizations also received funding through the Victims of Crime Act grant program in Nov. 2024, as the Journal-World reported.

In a statement, Kelly said the organizations that receive funding are “essential to Kansans impacted by crime,” with those groups providing mental health services, legal assistance, victim advocacy, crisis intervention and other services to crime victims and survivors.

Kelly said the funding will help the 64 organizations statewide continue supporting “the assistance crime victims and survivors need as they rebuild their lives, navigate the criminal justice system, and regain a sense of normality.”
