Photos: The fog of winter descends upon the Kaw River valley

The fog of winter was close to the ground in the Kaw River valley east of Lawrence on Jan. 6, 2026. In this scene near the intersection of E 1900 Road and N 1400 Road, the fog was below both the tree line and an old grain silo.

Motorists traveling through the Kansas River valley east of Lawrence on Tuesday morning were greeted with sunshine and a layer of ground fog hanging just above the harvested fields. The forecast from the Topeka office of the National Weather Service calls for unseasonably warm temperatures over the next few days. Wednesday is expected to produce sunny skies, light winds and a high of 63 degrees. Rain is highly likely on Thursday, with temperatures remaining in the mid 50s. Temperatures are expected to gradually cool heading into the weekend, with readings in the mid-to-low 40s Friday through Sunday.
