A nonprofit dedicated to maintaining an accessible and connected trail system in Lawrence is doing a survey to understand what people want to see in the future.

The 10-minute survey was shared by Friends of Lawrence Area Trails, or FLAT, on Sunday via social media. The organization aims to support local trail users and promote efforts to build and enhance the trail system.

The survey asks how respondents use local trails, including how often they visit and what activities they do, and then has them evaluate the current trail system in terms of maintenance, safety, accessibility and amenities. There are also questions about barriers that may limit use, such as safety concerns or lack of connectivity.

Additionally, the survey asks about priorities for improvement, including desired features, repairs or new trail connections. It also asks people to rank where funding should be allocated to support the trail system and how FLAT should prioritize its work.

As the Journal-World reported, the organization is currently working to create a new park, Cameron’s Bluff Park, north of Interstate 70 in Lawrence that would add multiple trails along the Kansas River. Earlier this year, the City of Lawrence announced the results of a survey on the Lawrence Loop, where respondents said they would prefer a downtown trail route near the river and away from traffic. The city is hoping to get funding from the Kansas Department of Transportation to help close the downtown section of the loop.
