The Lawrence Arts Center has chosen an artist and current staff member as its next interim leader.

Ben Ahlvers, a ceramics artist, will take over interim director duties starting July 22. According to a news release from the Arts Center, Ahlvers has worked in the areas of exhibitions, education and operations for 20 years.

“He is uniquely positioned to continue the successes we have had this fiscal year as we continue our search for longterm leadership in the months ahead,” the release said.

Current interim executive director Tom Huang will return to his role at the University of Kansas in the fall and will remain connected to the Arts Center as an active board member, teaching artist and ambassador.

“We are grateful for Tom’s leadership this past year, including his compassionate approach to changes and his efforts to nurture the internal culture of the Arts Center,” the release said.
