Extremely cold temperatures are expected in the wake of the weekend’s winter storm, with the possibility of more snow later this week.

The National Weather Service in Topeka projects that this week temperatures will remain below freezing through Friday, eventually moderating by the weekend. Wind chills below zero are expected for each morning through Wednesday.

“Low temperatures tonight and tomorrow look like maybe around 5 degrees below zero and wind chills could be as low as 15 below,” Adam Jones, lead meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Topeka, told the Journal-World.

According to the NWS, Tuesday will bring a high of 19 degrees and a low of minus 1 to Lawrence. On Wednesday, temperatures will reach 17 degrees during the day, with a low of 3 at night. Thursday will be slightly warmer, with a high of 27 and a low of 16. Friday is expected to hit 32, with a low around 12.

There is also a slight chance of snow later in the week. Bill Gargan, a meteorologist with the NWS, mentioned that while northeastern Kansas could experience some snowfall, the heaviest accumulation is expected in southeastern counties, which may receive up to 1.5 inches of snow from Thursday evening through Friday morning.

“The heavier snow will stay well south, probably across north Texas, eastern Oklahoma (and) up into eastern Missouri,” Gargan said. “There is a slight chance this could move a little further north.”

In parts of northeast Kansas, temperatures may creep above freezing on Thursday.

“Lawrence might be on the edge of seeing temperatures near freezing, but then, certainly by Friday, we warm back up above freezing,” Jones said.

Jones said that for the most part, the area isn’t expected to get a lot of wind over the next couple of days. With these temperatures, he said frostbite can occur very quickly on exposed skin. He urges multiple layers of clothing for those venturing outside.
